Nic and I drove to the Darrington area on Friday evening and camped at a spot off a forest road near the Sauk River. The sound of the river made for a pleasant campsite, and there was no precipitation overnight Unusually, there was no condensation in the morning. I slept in a 45°F sleeping bag with a lightweight Space Cowboy quilt on top, but the quilt provided little additional warmth. A sleeping bag rated closer to 32°F would have been more comfortable.
We woke at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and reached the Mount Pugh trailhead around 7:30 a.m. During the ascent, I was stung by a wasp or hornet. The upper portion of the route included moderately exposed scrambling. We reached the summit at approximately 10:30 a.m., about three hours after starting.
During the descent, Nic rolled his ankle. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the injury is a sprain or a fracture. He was also stung by a wasp on the way down. My hiking shoes felt too small during the descent, causing my toes to press against the front of the shoes.
We returned to the trailhead at approximately 12:45 p.m., completing the hike in roughly five hours and fifteen minutes and coming close to our five-hour goal.
After the hike, we drove to the White Chuck boat launch. We ate Chipotle burritos purchased the previous evening, drank Michelob beers, and relaxed in the sun. The recreation area had a pleasant sandy beach and calm, clear water and would have been a good place to spend more time.
We left the river around 2:00 p.m. and returned to Seattle by approximately 4:00 p.m. Later that evening, around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., we met up with the group and attended R Day featuring hard-rock music.
